The Training Schedule for 2017 has been set and the following courses are being offered:

Orange County Sheriff 3-Hour Handgun

The Orange County Sheriff Approved Handgun Safety Course is three hours of classroom instruction and training with an introduction to the operations of a variety of handguns and safe gun handling. The course introduces students to the responsibilities of Concealed Carry and includes an overview of the New York State Penal Law Article 35. This course satisfies the county mandated safety course requirement for all Pistol Permit applicants however, you do not have to apply for your permit to take this course. Handgun Safety is open to anyone interested in basic handgun operations and safe gun handling. Course length is 3 hours. The instructors for this course have been certified by the Orange County Sheriff.

NRA Range Safety Officer

Develops NRA Certified Range Safety Officers with the knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to organizing, conducting, and supervising safe shooting activities and range operations.

This course is nine hours long and is conducted in a classroom and at a shooting facility. Range Safety Officer candidates will learn roles and responsibilities of an RSO; Range Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs); range inspection; range rules; range briefings; emergency procedures; and firearm stoppages and malfunctions. Each Range Safety Officer Candidate will receive an RSO Student Study Guide, a Basic Firearm Training Program brochure, an NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure and a Course Evaluation form. Course length is 9 hours.

New York State Hunter Education

The Hunter Education course is required for learning the necessary safety techniques and responsibilities as a hunter when using a gun, muzzleloader, crossbow or bow to pursue wild game. Course length is a minimum of 7 hours. There is no fee to attend this class.

New York State Bow Hunter Education

This course is required for learning the necessary safety techniques and responsibilities when using a  bow and arrow to pursue deer and bear. While this course is not required for hunting deer with a crossbow, or for small game or turkey, DEC encourages you to take this course to learn general bow and tree stand safety techniques. Course length is 8 hours. There is no fee to attend this class.
